Sustainable Concepts Studio

Rory Bakke founded Sustainable Concepts Studio in Quarter 1, 2009 to leverage her vast experience with environmental strategy and program development in helping businesses and public agencies shift more rapidly to sustainable systems and practices. Her strong reputation in the world of Green Business and Sustainable Development is founded upon building powerful partnerships that focus on the three E’s of sustainability: Economy, Environment and Equity. Her aptitude for environmental project assessment and the formulation of win-win solutions has led to the development and strengthening of local, regional and State-wide environmental policies and the design of business outreach campaigns for environmental education and change. Rory is also a frequent presenter at conferences, workshops and public meetings.

For more than twenty years, Rory has designed and implemented award-winning projects that promote environmental stewardship while saving businesses money. Prior to founding her own company, she spent 20 years as a senior manager in local and regional government, most recently at StopWaste.Org (the Alameda County Waste Management Authority). During her tenure there she founded and directed the StopWaste Business Partnership, a technical assistance service that improves environmental performance and reduces operating costs for business and public agencies in Alameda County, California. The program provides expert support and funding for the purpose of preventing waste, conserving water and energy, resulting in the more efficient use of all resources. The Partnership has served over 600 businesses from 45 industries and is responsible for diverting over 100,000 tons of materials from local landfills. Signature projects include: helping the Oakland Athletics to become the first major league sports team to switch to bio-based plastic food service ware; teaming with Pechiney Plastic Packaging (a division of Alcan) to reduce the use of virgin plastic film needed to produce film produce bags; and the creation of UseReusables.Com to assist businesses, such as Ghirardelli Chocolate and Peerless Coffee, in adopting reusable transport packaging to reduce solid waste and greenhouse gas emissions.

The StopWaste Partnership received recognition for its efforts – including the State of California's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award in 2001 and Acterra's Business Environmental Award for Environmental and Sustainability Education in 2002.

In 2006-07, Bakke was appointed to serve on the Mayor of Oakland’s Green Economy Task Force, charged with formulating recommendations for bringing “green jobs” to Oakland. Other accomplishments include founding the California Sustainable Business Council and serving as a National Board member for the Recycled Paper Coalition. Bakke is a recent graduate of the Presidio School’s Executive program in Sustainable Business Management, has completed coursework towards an MBA at Presidio, concluded all coursework for an MPPA from Claremont Graduate University, and holds a certification in Integrated Waste Management from UC Berkeley Extension. Rory was also selected to serve as a CORO Fellow in Public Affairs in Los Angeles.
